Afterschool Professionals Week – April 21-25

This Afterschool Professionals Week, let’s celebrate the heart and soul of MSCR’s afterschool programs!

MSCR professionals create safe spaces, ignite a passion for learning and are a lifeline for MMSD families. Their incredible reach:

  • Engaging 585 students in afterschool and 374 in enrichment at 15 elementary schools.
  • Inspiring over 5,000+ middle schoolers and 1,700+ high schoolers after the bell.
  • Supporting 80 youth in grades 1-10 at the Allied Learning Center & Meadowood Neighborhood Center.

Take a moment to thank these amazing individuals for all they do!

Our afterschool programs offer a diverse range of engaging activities that go beyond the traditional. Here’s a glimpse into some of the exciting opportunities our students have been enjoying:

  • Healthy Smiles at Allied Learning Center: Thanks to a visit from UW Madison students and the Madison Smile Initiative, participants at the Allied Learning Center learned essential oral health skills. They practiced brushing and flossing on models, played fun dental games and went home with their own toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss!
  • Making a Splash at Orchard Ridge & Henderson: MSCR Enrichment at Orchard Ridge partnered with the West High School Boys & Girls Swim Team and MSCR Aquatics to provide free swimming lessons. Additionally, MSCR at Henderson is offering swimming lessons thanks to the generous support of the Friends of MSCR.
  • Future Scientists in the Making: Budding scientists in eight MSCR elementary afterschool programs are exploring the wonders of science with UW Science Clubs, led by dedicated UW-Madison science majors through the Adult Role Models in Science (ARMS) program.
  • Exploring History and Heritage: The Cherokee Heights Scholars of Excellence program embarked on their annual HBCU spring break trip, this year traveling to Tennessee. Scholars immersed themselves in the rich history of Memphis and Nashville, visiting the historic Lorraine Motel, four esteemed colleges and other significant landmarks.

Spring leagues are just starting, with middle school flag football and kickball teams practicing after school and competing against other MMSD schools. Contact your MSCR Site Director or visit mscr.org/programs/after-school-camps/middle-school/middle-school-programs/ for more information.
  • Elementary Soccer Kicks Off: Elementary Afterschool soccer is also beginning soon, offering young athletes the chance to travel and compete against other MSCR afterschool sites.
