Sandburg Elementary Afterschool & Enrichment Assistant Director (School Year)

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider.  MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center.  Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description: 

Lead! Learn! Inspire! MSCR is looking for experienced, reliable, and friendly youth workers with supervisory experience to help support and oversee all functions of an Elementary Afterschool site. After school sites serve between 40 and 80 students per day, divided into groups by grade level. Each site has 3-4 groups with two Program Leader staff in charge of each classroom. Form meaningful relationships with staff, students and families while leading, coaching and supporting the team. Paid professional development and staff training are provided. Job Description & Duties: 

Assistant Directors (ADs) are responsible for:
• Help oversee day-to-day programming for elementary-aged students during after school
• Help train, supervise and support program leaders who are in the classrooms with kids
• Help communicate with parents, school-day staff and the building principal
• Help support a safe and inclusive program environment for all
• Help problem-solve through conflicts as they arise
• Assist with office work, program/activity scheduling, supply purchasing and site organization
• Assist with food service
• Assist with leading emergency and safety drills
• Supervise and support the site in the Director’s absence
• Other duties as assigned

• Program Dates: Wednesday, September 2, 2026 – Thursday, June 10, 2027 (Monday through Friday, see calendar*)

    Program Locations & Staff Shift Times
    Sandburg (North) –  4114 Donald Dr, Madison, WI 53704
    • Mondays: 1:30-6pm, and Tuesdays-Fridays: 3-6pm

  • Pay Rate:

    $18.00 – 19.40 /hour

  • Minimum Qualifications:

    • Available Monday through Friday for the entirety of each shift
    • Experience working with youth and in teams
    • Demonstrated leadership qualities
    • Professional, reliable and stays in touch
    • Can adapt quickly and remain calm in serious situations
    • Must be 18 or older

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior experience in a similar role, and/or relevant training or education
    • Classroom experience
    • Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong
    • CPR, First aid
    • Bachelors or some college
