MSCR to Organize New High School Girls Flag Football League

MMSD High School & Verona High School Girls to Hit the Gridiron

Madison, WI – High school girls in Madison are taking the gridiron this spring, getting a head start on what is widely considered the next big wave in high school sports. Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR), in close collaboration with the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Athletic Department, is officially kicking off its inaugural High School Girls Flag Football League.

Adam Smith, Toki Physical Education Teacher, had the idea to create a girls football league and reached out to the MMSD Athletic department which suggested working with MSCR. Smith successfully secured a prestigious grant from the Green Bay Packers and USA football to help fund the league’s launch. With girls flag football rapidly growing nationwide and gaining momentum toward becoming an officially sanctioned Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) sport, this league positions Madison athletes at the forefront of the movement.

“This is an incredible opportunity to provide a brand-new athletic outlet for our female students,” said Mary Roth, MSCR Executive Director. “The support from the Green Bay Packers has been instrumental in turning this vision into reality. We are in a pilot year, and while we are focused on building up our roster numbers at a few sites, the enthusiasm, learning, and foundation we are building right now is unmatched.”

All four MSCR Afterschool High School Sites have teams that are participating. In an exciting addition to the local rivalry, Smith also reached out to Verona High School which has also joined the league, expanding the competition across district lines.
