Whitehorse Afterschool Site Director

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Purpose of Position:

Under the general supervision of the Madison Schools & Community Recreation (MSCR) Recreation Specialist – Secondary Programs, this position will develop, promote, coordinate and supervise a variety of out of school and co-curricular activities for middle school students in a safe and enriching environment. It will serve as a youth program site director during summer.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position supervises a range of MSCR seasonal and part-time staff including Assistant Directors, Program Leaders, Club Leaders, Coaches, Instructors, and Volunteers.

Supervisory duties include coaching, performance evaluation, provision of feedback, and ensuring accountability and alignment with District priorities and strategic goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Program Activity Coordination  55%
    1. Develop and implement a variety of out-of-school time activities for middle school students at assigned school.  Activities may be organized to take place before, during school day breaks, afterschool and no-school days, with a focus on afterschool hours
    2. Conduct daily activity visits to monitor program effectiveness, provide feedback to staff and assist in problem solving
    3. Create a physically and emotionally safe and welcoming program environment for all participants and staff
    4. Promote positive staff/student relationships and focus on positive youth development
    5. Lead MSCR Summer Youth programming
      1. Will be assigned to be the Site Director of an MSCR summer youth program or camp.
      2. Site location, age group of participants and programming may change during the summer.
  2. Program Monitoring and Support  20%
    1. Track participation statistics, maintain necessary records and submit reports based on site-based reporting requirements
    2. Monitor, be accountable for and stay within the site-based budget
    3. Purchase supplies, monitor expenditures
    4. Ensure that staff and participants follow MSCR and MMSD policies and procedures
    5. Attend appropriate team, staff, and school meetings
    6. Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities annually outside of required team/department training
  3. Staff Recruiting and Oversight 15%
    1. Recruit club leaders, sport coaches and volunteers from within and outside of school staff
    2. Build positive relationships with school-based staff and promote the values and benefits of offering out of school activities
    3. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff
    4. Develop staff work schedules, assign staff, and oversee daily work
    5. Collect, submit and approve timesheets
  4. Community Coordination  5%
    1. Promote clubs and intramural sports to students and teachers within the school setting
    2. Work with school staff to disseminate information to youth and families
    3. Maintain MSCR site-based website with current and accurate information
    4. Share website to school-based and department communications
    5. Serve as a liaison between MSCR, school personnel, community members, parents and community agencies
  5. Other Duties as Assigned  5%
    1. Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.
    2. Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
    3. Complete any and all district required training.
    4. Build collaborative relationships with business partners.

• Experience in positive youth development – preferably with middle school students
• Strong organizational skills, detail oriented and recreation program planning knowledge and experience
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with staff, customers, and community organizations
• Proven leadership abilities and effective problem-solving skills
• Knowledge of establishing teamwork, and building partnerships and positive relationships
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and conflict resolution skills
• Ability to perform when confronted with emergency, unusual and/or crisis situations
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with racially and culturally diverse participants, staff, parents, school staff and with the community

Required Qualifications:

• Experience in recreation, education, community organizing, volunteer coordination, or related fields
• Experience in developing, managing, leading, and evaluating recreation programs, or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities
• Experience working with individuals and families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
• Proficient with Google Workspace, Microsoft Word and Excel
• High school diploma required. Two years of post-high school education preferred
• Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred
